His youth

Born in Derbyshire, FitzRoy’s mother died when he was just fourteen months old.  His father remarried a few years later and it wasn’t long before he had siblings, George, Frances and Robert, to play with.

FitzRoy attended Harrow School, before buying a commission into the Royal Horse Guards as Cornet at the age of sixteen.  Six months later he was serving in the Peninsular War at the Battle of Vitoria and two years after that was on the Fields of Waterloo.
